Judy Suh
Lives and works in New York City.
Judy Suh is a New York based ceramics artist who creates softly luminous modern moon jars that radiate a sense of balance and humanity in their embrace of the imperfect. Moon jars are unadorned white glazed porcelain vessels with a distinct globular shape first produced during the Joseon Dynasty that have come to epitomize Korean aesthetics. Having apprenticed under master potter Shin Chul, Suh follows in the rich tradition of Korean ceramics which emphasizes artisanal process and naturalism over overwrought perfection. Every one of Suh’s works bear slight variances— be it a subtle asymmetry in form, an unevenness in the seam joints, or an ever-faint discoloration— that attest to the human hands and practices behind ceramic productions. Her moon jars thus invite the viewer to consider an alternate understanding of art and craft in which beauty is not an ideal to be achieved, but an experience to be felt.
Judy Suh works and resides in New York City. She received her BA from University of California Berkeley and has apprenticed under master ceramicist Shin Chul.
