Hwang Jeong Hee (황정희)
b. 1979, South Korea. Lives and works in Namyangju, South Korea
Hwang JeongHee creates bright and playful paintings that are fun contemporary interpretations of Korean folk art. Inspired by eohaedo, traditional paintings of sea life, Hwang paints colorful, cartoon-like fish that swim in pairs against stylized backdrops featuring other motifs common in Korean art, such as moon jars and camellia flowers. Fish are long-held symbols of prosperity and fortune in East Asia, and by presenting them in new context with modern materials, compositions, and techniques, Hwang aims to rechannel the protective powers of ancient symbols and bring love, hope, and blessings into the life of the viewer.
Hwang JeongHee received her BFA and MFA from Hong-ik University and works as an instructor at the SunHwa Arts High School. She has had over twenty-seven solo exhibitions throughout Korea and has also participated in over a hundred group exhibitions and art fairs in both Korea and abroad. Her works are found in both public and private collections throughout Asia, including in the Osan Museum of Art and Becky Art Space.
